The race had been postponed from Saturday to Sunday due to rain and thunderstorms. It was definitely a good move since the course was much improved by race time on Sunday at noon.

Both Linda and Patrick had great results with Linda winning the Womens Sport division and Patrick winning the Mens Sport Master division.

First mountain bike race of the season was at Hobby Park in Winston/Salem, NC, March 20th. We headed out to NC to look at come colleges for Cole and stopped by the Winston/Salem area for a race on the way home.

Weather was fantastic the whole trip - 70s and sunny. Samantha and Patrick got a good ride in on Friday and everyone pre-road the course on Saturday. The course is a blast, starts off on an RC Airplane runway then turns and heads up a Soap Box Derby track - it's quite a climb. Linda raced the sport class with Samantha and Nicole who were both racing sport for the first time.

Samantha and Nicole had a plan to hit the hill up the Soap Box track as hard as they could the first time. Linda wasn't crazy about the plan but the girls definitely put the hurt on up the hill.

Nicole headed up the Mirco pack followed by Sam and Linda.

Starting the New Year off right with some Winter Ice Racing at Findley State Park. Ice Racing??!! Yep, 150 #6x1/2" and #6x3/8" flat head sheet metal screws per tire and you're ready to go.

12/28/2010 - Night Ice Race at Findley State Park - Nab does an awesome job setting up the course lining the entire Figure-8 course with luminaries eliminating the need for lights!
What a blast!
Linda and Patrick try Ice Racing for the first time. Tires work pretty well but we need to add some studs in a few spots. Need to add two outside rows front and rear tires on Patrick's bike and add center row to Linda's rear tire. Patrick flats and ends the night early. Still a fun night! Linda 56.84 and Patrick 44.47.

01/09/2011 - Ice Race at Findley State Park
Linda and Patrick try ice racing for the second time while Nicole takes her first shot at it. New stud configurations work very well. Nicole and Patrick share riding the Jamis Dragon One 29er Single speed. Both turn pretty good time trials - 44.28 and 39.84 respectively. Linda is much faster than first race with 52.37. We run a little short on time and have to leave before the Feature.

01/15/2011 - Night Ice Race at Findley State Park
Nicole, Samantha and Patrick head out to the second Night race at Findley. This is the first time we get to stay and race all the races - Figure-8 Time Trial, Heats, Australian Pursuits, and the Feature. Sam is Ice Racing for the first time and has a great time trial only 3 seconds behind Nicole. Patrick has his fastest time trial yet. Sam does a great job in her heat and just misses catching all the no-studs who have a half lap head start. Nicole is forced to race Sam's MUCH smaller bike during her Heat with Patrick and Matt. She crashes in turn 3. Patrick can't hold off Matt in the shorter format Heat race and Matt makes a great pass on the inside of the second last turn. Patrick give up his bike so Sam and Cole can race the Australian Pursuit together. That is a FUN race. Cole has great positioning to pass both Sam and Gary but hesitates and allows Matt to pass them all at the same time! The Feature is a blast and this time Patrick holds off Matt to finish first.
What a great time! Four different races, hanging out by the fire drinking hot chocolate between races. Sam and Patrick try to ride around the lake after the final race but too much snow has turned to slush and it's nearly impossible to pedal through.

01/23/2011 - Ice Race at Findley State Park
Probably the last Ice Race of the season. Temp was about 14 degrees but it was sunny and wind was quiet so it wasn't too bad. Nicole and I both had flats but it wasn't too bad changing them and they held for the rest of the races. Nicole and I also had traction problems on the bottom half of the figure eight, Sam was riding freshly finished studded tires that Nab had graciously made for us this past week and she had great traction. It showed since she was faster than Nicole in all the races.
It was still a fun race, ice fisherman too lazy to walk through the snow pulling their sleds on the course during the race, Jerome with some unique takes on helmet ware, cycling technique, and a bit over zealous warming his gloves and Chip and Ted turning the fastest times of the season.
