The Ohio Interscholastic Racing League (OIRL) is in
full swing with a 5 race high school mountain bike series taking place August - October.
The OIRL High School Mountain Bike Series is held under USA
Cycling permit and is open to any high school student in the State of Ohio.
Each event has a J.V. and Varsity race with both girls and boys categories.
Most races held primarily on single-track trails, and most races are
multiple-lap events to provide a spectator-friendly experience. Racers do NOT
need to be on a school team to participate nor do racers need to have any race
experience. Each race venue offers racers a challenging multiple-lap event on
incredible trails.
An Ohio State Championship race will be held October 3, 2015. All the details can be found at 331racing.com

2014 was another exciting year as the girls were both riding for Brevard College Cycling. Sam found a new love, Downhill!!!!
The team is looking forward to the 2013 season.
We are very proud of Nicole's success cycling for
the Brevard Tornados. Here are her
accomplishments thus far.Nicole
is a freshman at Brevard College, Brevard, NC.
She was one of the leaders of the Brevard soccer
team, and was a key rider in the success of the
Brevard Cycling Team’s victory at the Mountain Bike
National Championships. Nicole competed in all four
events at nationals, the cross-country, short track,
downhill, and dual slalom races. The team relied
heavily upon their two female riders to be
competitive in all four events. The cycling team
just came back from Madison, WI winning the 2013
Division II Collegiate Cyclocross National
Championships. Nicole is also in the Honors Program
at Brevard and has made the Dean’s List for the fall
semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. She is also
a member of the Math Club and Sesquipedalian
Literary Society.
2012 has started off very well for the team.
We are super excited to have seen Nicole graduate
from Holy Name High School this May and wish her all
the best has she heads to Brevard College located in
Brevard, NC. She will be playing soccer and
cycling for the Brevard Tornados as well as pursuing
a degree in Mathmatics. Tyler continues to
improve and is riding strong this season. The
girls have moved up to the 19 and over women's sport
group and Patrick is rocking the Expert 45+ class.
Linda works to keep up with the kids in women's
sport.
There is a youth initiative happening in NE Ohio
with the simple premise to get kids outdoors and
experience mountain biking. Come join us every
Saturday 5:00 during September as the NE Ohio Inter
Scholastic Mountain Biking Group and 331 Racing hold
weekly youth rides where we'll work on a few skills
and then head out on the trail to put the skills to
use. The rides will be broken down by age and/or
skill level. Please bring your mountain bike, helmet
and water bottle. NOTE: Due to decreasing daylight
hours we've shifted to Saturday's.

Summer racing has been going well. Tyler decided to
start racing full-time in the 18- category after
doing so well at the NEO Power Series Reagan Park
MTB Time Trial - he finished 3rd. Samantha and
Nicole have been racing Sport which has doubled the
distance they're used to but they've both stepped up
and are handling the distance comfortably.

Left - CAMBA 2011 New Years Day poker ride.
Weather was near 50 and dry, quite a difference then
last year. Great way to start the new year!
Below - We took advantage of a dry and fairly warm
Sunday in February to get in a longer ride.
Samantha was in a soccer tournament at CSU, so
Patrick rode downtown via a nice winding route for a
2.5 hour ride. During a 3 hour break between
games 2 and 3, Linda and Nicole road the Lake
Shore bike way from E9th out to MLK parkway and up
Cedar Rd with a nice break at Starbucks at the top of
the hill.

Ice Racing! Yep, you read that right,
we've been sucked into Nab's deep dark world of Ice
Racing on the lake at Findley State Park.
Sounds pretty crazy, because it is. You have
to make your own studed tires because the pre-made
studded tires you can buy are NOT meant for racing
but more for commuters riding on slippery streets.
Trust me, snowy, slippery streets aren't the same as
Zamboni groomed lake ice! Therefore we use
about 150 #6 flat head 1/2" and #6 flat head 3/8"
sheet metal screws screwed into each tire from the
inside so the head is on the inside of the tire.
We drill pilot holes into the knobbies from the
outside. As Marc C told me recently, "Pat, you
know you don't have to do everything on a bike!".
But that's easy for Marc to say, living in Denver
where he can ride on the road through most of the
winter and when he can't ride on the road is not too
far from Vail and a zillion other winter
wonderlands. |

So, to stay on the bike during the
winter racing on the ice is actually a lot of fun.
The course at Findley consists of a Figure 8 short
track, and a longer, nearly one mile, cross country
course. At each Ice race Nab includes several
different disciplines - one lap time trial, several
heat races, Australian pursuit, and the Feature.
The Feature is run on the cross country course if
it's rideable and it's daylight, or just a whole
bunch of laps on the Figure 8 course. |
